FYI I wrote a trivial little shell script to compile all of the samples:

SAMPLE_DIR=~/hg/google-api-java-client/samples/review
cd $SAMPLE_DIR/shared/gdata/shared-sample-gdata
mvn clean install
cd $SAMPLE_DIR/shared/gdata/shared-sample-picasa
mvn clean install
for i in *-cmdline-sample *-appengine-sample; do cd $SAMPLE_DIR/$i && mvn clean
compile; done
